His Holiness Francis, Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Jesus Christ, Successor of the Prince of the Apostles, Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church, Primate of Italy, Archbishop and Metropolitan of the Roman Province, Sovereign of the Vatican City State, Servant of the servants of God halted his weekly audience to kiss and hold a disfigured man with Elephant Man disease. Very touching. The pontiff embraced and prayed with the man, who suffers from neurofibromatosis - a rare genetic condition that is not contagious. The condition has been long associated with the Elephant Man Joseph Carey Merrick (05 August 1862 – 11 April 1890). People living with the painful illness are often shunned because of their appearance. Earlier in Wednesdays general audience, His Holiness Pope Francis asked the faithful to pray for a sick girl. Pope Francis practices what he preaches. His compassion and humility are a ray of sunshine in a dark and troubled world. God bless him. :)
