Dear Colleagues, It is with great pleasure that I inform you about a new, unique, and fascinating monograph “Ancient and modern geoecosystems of Spitsbergen. Polish geomorphological research” edited by Zbigniew Zwolinski, Andrzej Kostrzewski and Marian Pulina (2013). This book, targeted at scientists and students, is a publication of the Association of Polish Geomorphologists (APG) and is a successful impression of the APG workshops and the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG/AIG) Regional Conference on Geomorphology in Spitsbergen. This is the first professional synthesis for all Polish scientific polar stations not only in geomorphological terms but also in geographical and geological dimensions. Moreover the book presents an extensive array of case studies from different parts of Spitsbergen. Publication is dedicated to Professor Alfred Jahn, famous Polish periglacial geomorphologist, who was the first to initiate an idea of publication of Spitsbergen monograph many years ago. This monograph is published as a monumental work of 66 authors, in English and Polish, in A4 format, containing 15 chapters on 456 pages with 213 full-color images and photographs as well as powerful list of bibliographic items. Those working and efficient in polar geomorphology, polar regions and allied areas, will find the text of immense value. The book can be ordered in Bogucki Scientific Publisher by e-mail [email protected]. The cost is 45 Euro (+ shipping cost; invoices are available). Please inform your librarians, students and friends. Contents: General part 1. Polish geomorphological research on Spitsbergen 2. Geographical environment of Spitsbergen Regional part 3. Modern climate changes on Spitsbergen as a basis for determining landscape metamorphosis 14. Geoecosystems of Spitsbergen – basis for assignment, landscape metamorphosis 15. Svalbard maps From Introduction: … The specificity of Spitsbergen’s polar landscape is found in the presence there of various types of glacial, proglacial, periglacial and paraglacial landscapes, which are diverse in terms of their stages of development and their physiographic and, especially, morpho-lithological formation. Spitsbergen is a unique place for researchers from various academic disciplines, but especially those from the Earth System Sciences …. It should be noted that today Poles have exceptional opportunities for conducting research on the climatic changes and increasing anthropressure currently being observed in polar geoecosystems, by means of structured, standardized monitoring at Polish research stations …. A variety of research programs are carried out at Polish polar stations on both ancient and contemporary morphogenetic and sedimentary environments, as well as on the geological bedrock and ecosystems … Kind regards, Zbigniew Zwoliński Association of Polish Geomorphologists, Dziegielowa 27, 61-680 Poznan, Poland, Tel. +48 618296174, Fax +48 618296271, URL: sgp.org.pl
