Dear Community, I am unsure how to begin, but by now we have all seen pictures and videos of Alden and the surrounding areas. These two dimensional images do not give a true perspective of what we have witnessed and/or experienced. As someone that lives 12 minutes from our District with only 8 inches of snow, I can attest from my days at school over the last several days that life in the snow band was drastically different than those of us that lived outside of the band. Efforts for snow removal began early Wednesday morning as we began moving snow with heavy equipment. The last two of the three payloaders just completed their work two hours ago at the Primary School. We have toured the District and are comfortable that our drivers will be able to navigate their runs with little difficulty. Each of our structures have been inspected and will be re-evaluated at 6:00 am Monday morning with the help of our architects. In addition, as of noon today none of our roofs have more than a few feet of snow on them and the precipitation is draining as melting is occurring. I have been in communication and meeting with the Village, Town and Emergency coordinators since this event happened and I can tell you that everyone has been cooperative and generous in helping one another. A big thank you to the Akron Central School District for sending over staff and equipment, as well as the Town and Village of Alden. As a result of this afternoons Situational Meeting at the Village Hall we will be opening on Monday with a 2 hour delay. The purpose of the delay is simply to allow our students to walk to school or wait for their bus in the daylight. Our primary concern is for their safety and this additional time will provide clearer visibility for them and the general public traveling at this time. Our website and the Village of Alden website will have additional information concerning the opening of sidewalks around the school after 6:00 tonight. A reverse 911 call will be sent announcing the two hour delay and reminding the public to be cautious as they travel in and around the Alden community. At this time the following sidewalks are cleared and offer safe pathways to the Middle and High Schools: -Southside of Broadway -Westside of Crittenden Rd from Broadway to Colonial Woods -Park Street near the school -Emerson from Broadway to Park Street -Alden Village website will have an updated list once they finish this evening, please visit it at www2.erie.gov/village_alden/ Sincerely, Adam Stoltman
