Dear Doctoral Candidates, This year 2014, now at the end, has been also the final year of my second mandate as director of the School of Advanced Studies. Therefore, I take the opportunity of the usual wishes for the New Year to thank you for the very pleasant time of interaction during these years of activity in the School. I was very lucky to have the opportunity to offer my services to the School of Advanced Studies for a so long time, from the preliminary organization in 2004, the real institution in 2005, up to this December 2014. The work to be done may seem hard, but it has been always very enjoyable for me. In fact, I feel that there are no other institutional charges in the University more gratifying than this, that requires efforts and energy to help young people as you are, motivated in learning and developing a research career. This job was so enjoyable that I would have proposed myself as candidate for a third mandate, if there was no limit to two mandates! However, I am convinced that changes are always very positive and the new director, prof. Roberto Ciccocioppo will do a wonderful job for the School, providing new ideas and energies. I do not know if I was good enough in helping you as I had hoped. For sure I thank you for your patience. When I see data about jobs and careers of the former Doctorate holders of our School, I feel very happy to realize that most of them continue to work as researchers or are satisfied in other type of careers that require knowledge and responsibility. Unfortunately, many very positive cases are related to careers outside of Italy, because in this Country research jobs are still limited, but I am sure it will improve in the next future. Please, be positive and work hard to prepare yourself! I encourage all Italian doctoral candidates to profit from the advantages of the international networking provided by the School to be open to the entire world for the career, but, possibly, maintaining the final objective to work for this Country when the conditions will be favourable. I will also propose my service in the mentorship programme of the School next year. With the former vice director of the School (prof. Piero Angeli) and the new director, we are going to organise an event as celebration of the first 10 years of the UNICAM School of Advanced Studies, possibly in the next February. I hope I will have the chance to thank you directly during that event, remembering all the work that has been done in these very pleasant years spent with you.
