Dear Editor: We have been residents since 1971. Since then we have seen our towns bucolic beauty diminished by the loss of small and very special farms, as well as the loss of vacant land. To condone rezoning of 1 Lake St for commercial interest along with a mixed use community would constitute a fatal blow to our towns very special quality of life- open space, low traffic volume and congestion, low crime rate and natural beauty. The would be developer has not come forth with $27,000 to be placed in escrow in order to fund appropriate development studies. Proper actuarial studies of risk and assessments of any development must be carried out prior to any definitive discussion, no less negotiation. To do otherwise, would be buying the proverbial pig in a poke. We must not succumb to outside special interests. Rather we must maintain our quality of excellence in governance and keep our super qualified Board in place. Let them keep working for our special interest which is our town. Council President Roger DeBerardines record on the environment is outstounding. He has been nicknamed Mr. Environment by the council and rightly so. Proof of this is his successful legal win in USRs Clean Water Act litigation against the Rockland Sewer Authority. Roger is proactively concerned about the environment and how it affects our community. He is dedicated to doing what is right for our town and has been dedicated for many years. We must keep Roger DeBerardine and our dedicated council members in office. The future of USR is dependent upon their environmentally and fiscally sound governance. Edgar and Barbara Buehler
