Dear Elimu na Ufanisi Supporters, We had a great day on Saturday - TopicsExpress

Dear Elimu na Ufanisi Supporters, We had a great day on Saturday 24th August 2013 on our EUT Mentorship programme at Jumuiya Conference Hall. Thanks to the EUT members in attendance Chairman, Waiyaki, Kahura, Muigai, Thuo Kimani who gave their time, resources and worthy guide to our sponsored students; May God bless you. All the six EUT sponsored students were in attendance and were joined by five secondary school sons and daughters of EUT members. In total we had 11 kids all in between form 1 and form 3. Many thanks to our MP, Hon Eng. Kiragu who found it worth to spare time from his busy schedule and share a cup of tea, his experiences and words of wisdom with our students. Sitting in one table and talking to the MP at a very personal level was a great experience for the students. To crown it all he gave warm handshake, a business card to each of them and paid lunch for 7 kids all amounting to 11k. You agree with me this will be a story each one of them will narrate for a long time. It was all about mentoring our students and our MP did it in style. My gratitude goes to our Chairman who made all the arrangements for the day, contacting the parents to release their kids, arranging for the kids transport, conference room arrangements, chairing the programme and making the whole day a success. I remember that email he circulated – that he kept thinking late in the night on the mentorship programme; which demonstrate his commitment to the course. May God bless you for your commitment. As our Chairman says ‘the great thing with the Trust is that once a meeting is set it has to go on and that is our strength’. The meeting was an outstanding success. 1. We started by understanding the mentorship, reviewing the Biblical and other mentors. The students participated in the discussion each giving examples. Their good understanding of the subject was unquestionable. Each EUT member made contributions on the mentorship programme and underscored its importance. Our Chairman made it clear what we expect from them; that the future of EUT lay in their hands and should make it greater than the founders. 2. The second session was even more interesting. The students were divided into three groups to discuss and present what they expect from the mentorship programme. Each group chose their leader and made presentations. The following are their requests to be considered in the mentorship programme. a. To have frequent retreats preferably twice a year; to put in their own words - the retreats to be held ‘far away’. b. To include educational trips. c. Career clinics where professionals from various fields can give career guidance. d. More students be included in the programme. 3. The third session involved going through the school performance of the EUT sponsored students. Chairman presented the report forms and we noted a significant drop in their performances, this is a concern because we expect them to have good performance that can guarantee JAB admission to public universities. Decision was reached to have one-on-one session with the students in order to establish their challenges and offer guidance to improve the performances. The pairing was done where Peter Waiyaki and Thuo Kimani met the Form 3s; Stephen Kahura and Muigai met the Form 2s, and myself met the Form 1s. Chairman had the bigger group of the 5 kids of EUT members. This was a very productive session for we were able to freely discuss their strengths, weakness on every subject and challenges they face. One very positive outcome was that the students are not happy with their performances and they have the will to improve. They understand they must score high marks in KCSE to qualify for their dream careers. They set targets for themselves and we expect future performances to range from B+ and above. We had none of our lady members in attendance to be paired with the girls as had been planned earlier and therefore it was agreed that the above pairing will be maintained for the time being. We had a buffet lunch, two tables were reserved for EUT and sharing the meal with our students was amazing. For a fact, our students appreciate EUT support and will not disappoint. When you engage them you realise they are bright and smart kids, they have what it takes to be great people who can take our course to even greater heights. We have a duty to support them, mentor them to be greater than ourselves in serving our community and our nation. Let us support them, we can make a difference. I may not have written a long one like our Chairman would have done, it’s my hope he will fill in the gaps I may have left. Similarly those who were in attendance can share their experience of the day. Henry Chui Njenga
