Dear Family and Friends, as we continue our dialogue on “Living Through Crisis,” the fifth stage to be mastered is to understand and acknowledge depression, for depression will surely come! The key is to arrest it as soon as possible. Denying your emotions over what has brought on the crisis will damage your ability to heal. Giving in to complete depression with destructive behavior will only heighten the intensity of the pain. When the crisis of losing a loved one hits you should wake up every day and find a way to live your best life. And remember loss is loss, so the loss of a job to one person is as astronomically hurtful as is the loss of a loved one to another person. Sometimes we try to out-loss one another and thereby justify our emotional instability. But still get up every day take a shower, and complete your tasks. Exercise, eat right, and get the best night’s sleep you can, even if you need a physician’s help to do so, including the use of a therapist or counselor. Find laughter in life, cry when you need to, or as I like to say, “have your moment,” then get up and do what you need to do. Whatever you do, do not withdraw from family even if the family is in crisis, because even in crisis there’s strength in numbers. While taking care of yourself, think beyond yourself and see and enjoy others. Live your best life and remember that the Word of God encourages us to put our hope in God when you are downcast according to Psalm 45:5-6. Second Corinthians chapter 4 lets us know that we may experience some tough situations, but we can avoid deep depression. And finally remind yourself that somebody else has come through what you’re going through and God will sustain you with and by His grace just like He sustained them because He has assured us that He’s no respecter of persons, what He’s done for one He will do it for another according to His perfect will. Love you all!
