Dear Fellow Officers, Today the US Senate has confirmed Dr. Vivek Murthy as the 19th Surgeon General of the United States. We are very fortunate to have an energetic physician, committed to health, in such a critical position that can serve as the face of public health for our nation. On behalf of all the officers of the Commissioned Corps of the US Public Health Service I welcome Dr. Murthy into our ranks and pledge the support of the Corps in the further fulfillment of our mission-to protect, promote, and advance the health and safety of our nation. Our mission continues today across the globe. From Washington DC to Atlanta to Alaska, from Western Africa to Geneva to Thailand, our 6700 officers serving in 26 different departments and agencies, in 800 locations worldwide, should all be proud that the legacy of the Surgeons General continues. From the first Supervising Surgeon, John Maynard Woodworth in 1871 the mantle of public health leadership is now passed to Vivek Murthy in 2014. We stand ready! I remain honored and humbled to have served as the Acting Surgeon General for the last 18 months. As a career officer, what was once a fantasy had become a reality and I would like to especially thank the Corps leadership that I had the privilege of serving with during this time. Special thanks to Acting Deputy Surgeon General RADM Scott Giberson, Chief of Staff CAPT Robert DeMartino and the whole Immediate Office of OSG, Acting Director of DCCPR CAPT Scott Helgeson and his whole team, Acting Director of DSI CAPT Eric Shih and his team, CAPT Robert Tosatto and the MRC team, my fellow Flag Officers and the CPOs, SGPAC, Liaisons, and PAC leads who dedicated themselves to the good of the Corps and the mission. Most importantly, I thank all the officers of our beloved Corps for your devotion to mission during this time period. Lets begin this next phase in Corps history with a rededication to mission and the enthusiasm to accomplish it well-with Leadership, Excellence, Integrity, and Service! RADM Boris D.
