Dear Friends - David P. France Dance Company has pledge the next $1,000 donation to the WHITE WAVE DANCE/Young Soon Kim Dance Company and its DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL & COOL NEW YORK DANCE FESTIVAL... Thank you for all your support! xo David Young Soon Kim, artistic director and founder of WHITE WAVE YOUNG SOON KIM DANCE COMPANY and presenter/curator of WHITE WAVE’s Festivals Project, is one of the most renowned choreographers/teachers/dancers Korea has ever produced. Born in Kwang Ju, Korea, she began studying traditional Korean dance at the age of seven. She later studied ballet and modern dance, winning a gold medal in the Korean National Dance Competition for three consecutive years. Ms. Kim received a BFA in dance from Korea’s Ewha University in 1974. At the invitation of the Martha Graham School, Kim came to the United States in 1977 and was awarded the Rudolf Nureyev Scholarship under which she studied for three years. She has also studied with David Howard, Louis Falco, The School of American Ballet, Harkness Ballet, Lynn Simonson, Zvi Gotheiner and in workshops with Lar Lubovitch, Twyla Tharp and Martha Myers. Ms. Kim danced with Jennifer Muller /The Works from 1980-1984 performing in Canada, Central and South America, the Caribbean, Europe and the United States. She was Co-Artistic Director for the Throne Dance Theater in NY, `83-`86 and also has performed with the Pearl Lang and Joyce Trisler Companies, among others. Ms. Kim received three InterArts grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and a Choreographer Fellowship from the New York State Council on the Arts. In 1985-1987 she was commissioned to create three works with the legendary jazz musician Dave Brubeck for the InterArts Festival in upstate New York. In 1988 Young Soon Kim formed WHITE WAVE RISING Young Soon Kim Dance Company, with which she has created more than 48 works. She has toured extensively in the Far East, including a highly successful 100 day solo tour of several major Asian cities participating as a guest performer in the 1988 Summer Olympics World Dance Festival, the 1992 Year of Dance Festival held in Seoul. In 1996 she toured 10 cities in four countries in the Far East and in Hong Kong, and CNN interviewed her for “Inside Asia” which aired internationally. From 1994-1996 Ms Kim was no stranger to media coverage. KTV Channel 17 and WMBC-TV Channel 63, NYC and 1998 Manhattan Neighborhood Network aired a 1 hour program with a dance performance and interview of Ms. Kim’s life and career. Kim was also chosen as an artist for a documentary film “Arirang; A Celebration of Korean Centennial”. Directed by Tom Coffman, this film premiered in May 2003 at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC and subsequently aired on nation-wide PBS television. Ms Kim celebrated the company’s 10th Anniversary with a New York City season at DTW’s Bessie Schoenberg Theater, presenting the world premiere of the full-evening dance theater work, E x i l e. In May 2000 the Ms Kim and the company toured to four cities in China as a “Waves 2000 China tour” with a thrilling new Collaboration with Tian, one of the world’s most exciting virtuoso pianist/composers. In June, 2001 Young Soon Kim performed a solo concert as part of the The 7th Juksan International Festival in Juksan, Korea. She also appeared as a guest artist for the Dog Days Dance Festival in August, 2003 presented by Hubbard Hall, NY and Seoul International Dance Festival in October, 2003 in Seoul, Korea. Since relocating to DUMBO, Brooklyn in 2001, as a curator and a presenter, Ms. Kim has presented a series of Festivals (link) at the WHITE WAVE John Ryan Theater. These festivals are mainstays of New York’s modern dance scene, involving 690 participating choreographers and dance companies and over 3,500 participating performers.
