Dear Friends, I am disgusted and disappointed by the Time Magazine issue - Civil Rights in America. No where did the unintelligent editors, writers or contributors to this magazine issue mention DR. RALPH DAVID ABERNATHY, WITHOUT WHOM THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN NO CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT. IF Ralph David Abernathy had not organized the first Mass Meeting calling for an organized boycott of the Montgomery Bus System after Rosa Parks was arrested; invited his best friend Martin Luther King, Jr. who was busy writing his doctorate dissertation to focus and join him; enlisted the support of his fellow Alabama State University Professors and fellow Ministers to spread the word of boycotting the buses to the 50,000 Negroes of Montgomery; got his wife Juanita, a business Education Teacher at the black High School in Beatrice, Alabama to write the Business Plan for the organization that he named the Montgomery Improvement Association and was the Vice President; Co Founded the Civil Rights Movement and Co Founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference; rescued, fed, housed and helped the assaulted Freedom Riders in his home, then invited Martin Luther King from Atlanta to return to Montgomery to support the Freedom Riders and then he held a Mass Meeting in his church - First Baptist Church and the angry KKK turned over cars, set them on fire and threatened to kill all of the people in his Church trapping them over night and forcing Atty General Robert Kennedy to send in the National Guard to protect Abernathys Church, Congregation and the Freedom Riders on their journey; led the Movements of Montgomery, Albany, Birmingham, St. Petersburg, Selma, Chicago, Memphis, the Poor Peoples Campaign, Charleston Hospital workers strike; led the fight for a Civil Rights Bill, a Voting Rights Act and Affirmative Action; demanded that Congress fund creation of a National Food Stamp Program; demanded that Congress create a Free Meal Program for Low Income Children; demanded that Congress create the Cedar Work Program to create job training for poor people; ENVISIONED and worked until HIS IDEA of a National Peoples Holiday called THE MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR HOLIDAY to honor his best friend was a Federal Holiday; worked tirelessly and unrelentingly planning, being the strategist, negotiating, raising the money, suffering violent assaults, suffering daily death threats, having his home and church severely bombed, and being in the fore front of the Civil Rights Movement; paid Ebenezer Baptist Church from his personal savings the money that the Church requested so that Rev. King Sr. could have his son Martin Luther King Jr.s body buried next to their Church years before the King Center was built; organizing black people across America to boycott grocery stores, fresh produce, lettuce and grapes to support Cesar Chavez and the Farm Workers; and on and on. His widow Mrs. Juanita Jones Abernathy, who is the only person alive from the founding of the Montgomery Bus Boycott and Civil Rights Movement, whose home was the primary meeting place during the days of the Civil Rights Movement, who sat next to Coretta Scott King at the March on Washington is not mentioned either, nor was she invited to give her personal memory of the March On Washington. Its difficult to even find pictures and events with Martin Luther King Jr. without Ralph David Abernathy. Why is this important historic figure excluded from Time Magazines Civil Rights Issue? SHAME on TIME MAGAZINE. TIMEs Editorial staff is uninformed and that is astounding! With attempts like this to pass themselves off as scholars on the subject of Civil Rights, its no wonder why millions of Americans, young, old, rich, poor, black, white, red, brown and yellow dont know Civil Rights History, Black History, American History and why there is a rise of racism, violence and unawareness in America.
