Dear Friends, I was shocked to learn that Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights (SPHR) McMaster has decided to launch an on-campus event called “Hug a Terrorist.” This shameful publicity stunt trivializes the severity of international terrorism and undermines the corresponding suffering that it causes victims and their families. Terrorism is a threat to the fundamental values of freedom, democracy, and diversity that underpin our peaceful and open Canadian society because its ultimate purpose is to break our solidarity. We must be united in our condemnation of SPHRs political stunt, especially given the recent and tragic events in Quebec and Ottawa that affected us all only a few weeks ago. My sympathy will always be with the victims of senseless acts of violence, not those who seek to divide and demoralize us by using violence. I invite you to share this status, and to express your condemnation of this on-campus event. In support of all victims of terror, I will be making a personal donation to the Stand on Guard Fund standonguardfund and encourage you to do the same. The Stand On Guard Fund supports the families of Patrice Vincent and Nathan Cirillo who recently lost their lives defending Canadian values.
