Dear Friends; Thank you for helping us get the word out, that - TopicsExpress

Dear Friends; Thank you for helping us get the word out, that Junipero Serra is not the kind, Fairy Tale Saint we learned about as children. Rather, he is the importer of racism, ethnocentrism, exploitation, slavery, rape, disease, and genocide in our beautiful homeland. A very important dialogue has started across the globe regarding the Popes decision to elevate Junipero Serra to Sainthood. I believe we are all part of this history changing event. Many Catholics are embarassed that such a seemingly progressive Pope would canonize someone like Junipero Serra. This is a step back into the dark ages of the plague and dungeons, and is creating even more emotional harm to the descendants of those that perished because of the Mission and Rancheria systems, either by torture, rape, disease or in the Americanization Boarding Schools. Native Americans have been disenfranchised long enough, why insult and harm us, further, in the name of the Catholic Church? California Indians are in such pain, shock and in a state of anger over the Popes plans, that we cant begin to think of the solution we want and need, other than a complete and total apology from the Pope and Vatican for the past sins of Junipero Serra, his agents and the Mission System. The healing process will never begin to take place while our ancestors are blatantly disrespected by the Church. Your comments are thought provoking and inspiring. We hope to deliver the Petition soon, but have one small request. Can each of you please spread the word to just one more person? There is strength in numbers and we feel that 5,000 is a substantial number to get the attention we need. Feel free to share our link with family, friends, and other ethical, critical thinking people.
