Dear Friends: We communicate on Facebook for many important reasons, one is to share childhood memories and hopefully another is to share blessings, as a few have in regard to the annual Children’s Book Fair (CBF). Our beginnings began in Harlem. We all started our lives in this historic community known and loved around the world for reasons we know well. Many of us have moved on in our lives, but even so we remain connected to the memories of the “old neighborhood.” Deeply woven in our minds are pictures of growing up in the Lincoln Houses, The Riverton, Lenox Terrace, and the surrounding neighborhoods. Whether we played ball at the 135th Street Park or the Kennedy Center, attended Public Schools 197, 133, Harriet Beecher Stowe or Frederick Douglas, hung out at the various social establishments in the community or just stood on 135th Street and gulped down one of the best hotdogs a dime could buy. Yes, we have memories, so many happy and let’s face it, some sad. You are probably wondering why the trip down memory lane? Well, quite frankly we need your help. Let us pay forward our blessings! For the past three years, in August, community volunteers have sponsored a CBF. Generally, children select 12 FREE books. The purpose is to promote literacy and give children an opportunity to establish their own home libraries. Rarely are culturally diverse books free, but others are. This is why YOUR HELP IS NEEDED. Don’t you feel it is worth all of our efforts to help our children and their families? The 4th annual CBF is August 2. As a community, WE must do better and WE can. Please do not rely on others to donate because they may be relying on you. A contribution of $10.00 or more if you like, will provide books that our children can relate. Your donation will help encourage more children to develop the love of reading.
