Dear Friends, With the Minister claiming today our beach will be closed for 2015; the Evening Echo article claiming the same; the mention of Youghal on Vincent Browne TV3; 600 days of roadworks; the long-term problems at Moll Goggins Corner; and, the long-term effects of austerity - Youghal has its work cut out for us. Its a shame because we all know what a wonderful community is Youghal. To help boost tourism, Id like to propose a great festival - The First Annual All Ireland Ice Cream Cup & Festival. Given all of the great restaurants and hotels we have, the natural beauty of Youghal, its history, the Blackwater River and our silver sands - we must do more to bring people to Youghal. Im proposing a festival where the best ice cream makers in Ireland will come to make ice cream in a competition to be named Irelands best. We could feature Irelands dairy industry; people could milk cows and re-connect with Irelands rural life; people could churn ice cream in old fashioned buckets; we could have Youghals wonderful bakeries and restaurants sell Youghal food; showcase our agriculture; industry; artisan crafts; local artists; present our history; organise games on beaches (making sure events are scheduled all over Youghal from Perks and Clancys to the towne centre to Temple Michael, cruises up the Blackwater; events in the College Gardens and more -- a festival that is not limited to Barrys Lanes or the Quays and offers something for everyone. We could get the best food critics in Ireland to judge the ice cream; have cross-border support for this All Ireland event -- and do what other countries already do and put on a wonderful ice cream festival. Imagine, ice cream makers from all over the country - Youghal foods sold instead of external vendors who sell the run-of-the-mill festival foods -- local artists being showcased and thousands of people coming to Youghal in a summer forecasted to be a challenge because of yet another year of road works and beach closures. Please be constructive and let me hear your thoughts as if we are going to put on the festival the likes of which Youghal deserves - we need to start quickly. Remember, almost 4,000 people are Friends on this page so lets put our communitys best foot forward and be constructive. Thanks in advance for your comments and ideas! P.S.
