Dear Friends of Earle Family Farm, It’s the start of September - TopicsExpress

Dear Friends of Earle Family Farm, It’s the start of September on the farm and the leaves are just starting to turn here and there. We are preparing for the winter months by seeding a large number of trays with various greens. Arugula, Spinach, and lettuce mixes will replace the tomatoes and peppers that are occupying the greenhouses at the moment. These will be available to harvest late fall, some will go towards the winter CSA, and some will over-winter until early next spring. We moved the ewes from the upper field to down by the farmhouse. Since the trailer was handy we loaded all but one stubborn ewe and two confused lambs onto it, and then drove them down to their new pasture. Crossing our fingers we ran behind the trailer as Tom drove and kept the one ewe and lambs from straying too far from the vehicle. They did fairly well, as they mostly wanted to stick close to their moving flock. It was a good mid morning wake up sprint for us. The broccoli is looking really wonderful at the moment. Each one of us on the farm has spotted the woodchuck near but not inside the perimeter fence. It seems to be working to keep him out, and we have been able to take quite a lot of broccoli to the Saturday Farmers’ Market, and sells well. We just finalized a date for a late fall workshop at the farm. We are going to have a representative from Compost Power Network come here on October 26th to help install a “Jean Pain Mound”. The mound is composed of wood chips and manure. The pile will decompose releasing heat that will be used to warm one of the greenhouses and possibly the farm store for the following 12-18 months. We are looking for 20 participants. The workshop details will be posted on NOFA-NH website in the next few days, or you can email/stop by the farm for more information. In the store: -Maple Syrup -Homemade Jams -Wool -Assorted Produce (broccoli, corn, tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, garlic, carrots…..) -Pasture raised chicken ~Earle Family Farm (Natalie and Kyle)
