Dear Glen Helen Ecocamp parents, I want to make you aware of an incident in Glen Helen. Before I launch into those details, let me first say that all of our campers are safe, in the lodge building, and in the midst of what hopefully to them feels like a normal day at camp. Now, those details in brief: Approximately 11:30 today, one of camp staff observed a suspicious individual, and that the person appeared to be carrying a gun. We immediately called the authorities and placed the children and staff under lockdown. While it is not clear that there is actually any danger, we want to be absolutely, positively sure that the Glen and the Outdoor Education Center is safe before the lockdown is lifted. To that end, the Greene County Sheriff has established a guarded perimeter around the Outdoor Education complex, and has brought in a police dog to search the preserve to verify that the Glen is safe. While this is going on, our naturalists are with the campers, and we are proceeding with our afternoon programs from the lodge building. As a precaution, the sheriff requests that we send the children home in your care, so I would like to make arrangements to do that as soon at is convenient for you. One of our staff would be able to meet you at the lodge door and to sign your child out. Once we have verification from the authorities that the preserve is safe, it is our intention to lift the lockdown, and resume outdoor activities. We will also be providing updates, as information is available, through the Yellow Springs News (ysnews). You are also always welcome to reach us at the Outdoor Education Center office, 937-767-7648. Thank you, Nick Boutis Executive Director, Glen Helen Ecology Institute
