Dear Governor Cuomo: (Submitted to NY Times) As a teacher in - TopicsExpress

Dear Governor Cuomo: (Submitted to NY Times) As a teacher in NYS and in light of your anticipated reelection, I would like to save you some time and refocus the monopoly over public education comment you made about teachers. You see Governor, I say this because the monopoly over public eduction is not held by a collective of educators, it is held by a corporation, an international corporation for that matter. Your Manhattan hedge fund investors know who I am talking about and can clue you in later. For now, let me take you on an imaginary field trip, there is no room or money for a real one in a monopoly. So close your eyes... Take a walk into my classroom and you will observe the Pearson Education Company monopoly in maximum overdrive. The 2010 NYS Attorney General investigation into the Pearson monopoly revealed lots and assigned responsibility, but did not break it or slow it one iota. Browse through a teachers resources and you will find scripted Pearson modules and lessons. Open a students desk and you will find Pearson books. Open certain Pearson books and you will find State assessment questions & answers. They cost more, so you wont find them in my district. Decide to use the smart board and you will encounter jingly Pearson computer programs that seem to crash and freeze at the worst times. After lunch, you can walk a student to the nurse for their meds, diagnosed with ADHD by an individual from Pearson. Stay for the afternoon, and take a Pearson exam riddled with mistakes and inappropriate content. See how my sharp students pick out the cut and paste errors and share them aloud at the most awkward moments. Watch how confusing language in the questioning frustrates many students and turns them off to learning. This year Pearson took a bold step in privatization and inserted brand names like Nike, Legos, & Mug Root Beer into the assessments. This tactic strengthens their monopoly with support companies. If you come back after the reelection, I will let you sit in on my evaluation, administered by Pearson also. Youll see how the scores are structured and cut by the State to make us teachers look bad, so Pearson can come back and replace me with one of their teachers who will fit nicely and perform for their monopoly at a cheaper cost. If I am still around in May, I invite you for at least two weeks of intensive test prep with you guessed it, old Pearson assessments. You can stay for the exams and experience paragraph two all over again, but dont expect a good score. That would cut into the monopoly. You see Governor, its necessary to change the assessment rubrics and format regularly, so the students and parents dont pick up on the monopoly. Its called ensuring the monopoly and that would defeat its whole purpose of making money, not educating. And dont think of going to the parents or public about this scheme going on here. Pearson will make you sign a confidentiality agreement before you leave the room and attack you professionally and legally if you violate it and speak of the goings on in my classroom. Its called protecting the monopoly. So, in closing Governor Cuomo, I hope this explains the true mechanics of the real monopoly over public education in America today. Because the monopoly over public education by teachers you speak of just isnt correct. You may not be aware, but the Pearson Education monopoly allows the Manhattan hedge fund guys, I spoke of earlier, to donate so richly to your reelection campaign, which brings me to another monopoly.... Sincerely, Mychael OBowen AKA- Mr. Monopoly A NYS Teacher fed up with the Pearson Education monopoly in his classroom
