Dear Humane Society of Wilkes Members, On Monday October 27, our friend and President of the Humane Society of Wilkes Joanna Cates, passed away after battling cancer since April of this year. Jos contributions to the Humane Society were tremendous. Shortly after joining the Humane Society in August 2005, she began fostering dogs and cats in her home. She rescued pets from the Wilkes County Animal Shelter and took them home to foster until adopted into a new home. Hundreds of dog and cats found new homes under Jos care. In 2008 she became a board member and chaired the Foster Adoption Committee. Jo knew this was not enough to decrease the number of dogs and cats euthanized every year in Wilkes county, so she became an avid promoter of low cost spay/neuter programs. She first worked tirelessly getting Wilkes County pets transported to a low cost spay/neuter clinic in Hickory. Then in 2010, she organized with the local vets to provide this low cost program in Wilkes County. Hundreds of Wilkes County residents benefit from this program each year, and euthanasia numbers have dropped at Wilkes County Animal Shelter since the program began. Jo served as President since August 2010. During her time as President she organized the purchase of a much needed building at Hidden Oaks Dog Park that the Humane Society currently uses for meetings, adoption fairs, pet grooming and storage. We say goodbye to not only a friend but an advocate of dogs and cats in Wilkes County.
