Dear Jazz Friends, I have written a book called Buddy Bolden’s Storyville Blues. In my opinion the descriptions of legendary jazz pioneer Buddy Bolden and the hard times he lived in have been misleading and wrong, as I believe he has been unnecessarily dissociated from the harsh historical context of his time. This book is a result of the frustrated indignation I have felt for many years. Is it important? Well, if you think that we can change history at will, then it is not. However, I have chosen fiction rather than biographical research because it makes it possible to portray Buddy Bolden as the complex, multifaceted person I strongly believe he really was. Furthermore, Buddy Bolden had to deal with problems one encounters both as band leader and family man. I should know, as I have been a bandleader for almost forty years and been married all along. I have chosen to let Buddy’s common-law wife, Nora Bass, tell the story of their difficulties living together in New Orleans. She describes him as enigmatic – a unique jazz musician, womanizer, family man, boozer and rebellious social activist, who clashed with the authorities that feared his influence and power in the black community. The preface is written by the internationally acclaimed trombone player and bandleader Ole “Fessor” Lindgreen. Buddy Bolden’s Storyville Blues is available in both English and Danish.
