Dear Jefferson Academy Secondary families, Welcome to the - TopicsExpress

Dear Jefferson Academy Secondary families, Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year! We hope you enjoyed your summer and found time to spend with family and friends. As you all know, the traffic/parking situation is less than ideal. Actually, at times it is downright awful! We understand your frustration and we have been working toward a solution. Currently we are in negotiations with the City of Broomfield to allow students to park in the lots to the north of our campus. Even if this is approved by the city council, we need the owner of the property to agree to allow us to install both a bridge to span the small creek and a path. Board members are working on this issue. Also, the Broomfield police are advocating for the use the of fire lane that runs behind the building. Initially, we were told by the fire department that we could NOT use this lane. They are currently working on this issue. Furthermore, the board had our architects and builder price out the cost of building more parking spaces on our own land. Unfortunately, the cost was over $80,000. All of the above options will require time and money to accomplish. Although these will remain options, we don’t currently have adequate funds for the projects proposed. Lastly, the city may choose to put in a traffic light. Our agreement with Broomfield states that should a light become necessary, JA has to share in the cost, which is estimated at $125,000. While we remain hopeful that one or more of these options will bear fruit, the reality is that the immediate easing of the traffic congestion can only be done by parents and students. We offer these suggestions: Carpool: Parking lots at 104th and Reed (Promenade area) are mostly empty, especially in the mornings. If groups of parents would meet there before and after school, students could get into one car and head to school, allowing the other parents to head home or to work. Imagine the traffic if only 1 out of 4 cars came to campus! If you are new to the school and don’t yet know other families, try Way to Go. (see below) To arrange a carpool, you may also be interested in a complimentary service available through “Way to Go,” formerly “RideArrangers.” Registration is free and your information is secure. To register: 1. Go to WayToGo.org 2. Click SCHOOLPOOL 3. Click “view participating schools” 4. Select Jefferson Academy Charter School from the list 5. Follow the step-by-step registration instructions (JA’sK-12 grade passcode: jaguar) Contact Way to Go at 303-458-7665 or [email protected] for assistance. Stagger drop off and pick up times: Students are allowed on campus from 7:00 am to 4:30 pm. (those involved in clubs and sports will often be on campus even longer). Students can come into the commons and chat with friends or do homework or they can head to the soccer field and hang out with friends. We expect secondary students to be able to behave themselves and follow school rules. Staff is on campus between 7:30 and 3:45. Make a plan with your kids: Make sure your kids know when you are coming to pick them up. Waiting in line in 90 degree heat is frustrating, causes traffic backups and makes waiting 5 minutes feel like 20 minutes! Exercise patience: The teachers and staff are outside each morning and afternoon trying to keep traffic moving so kids get to school on time and parents get to work on time. They don’t enjoy standing in the heat (and soon cold) anymore than you do. Please follow the rules, communicate with your kids and take a deep breath. With the elementary starting school tomorrow, it is important that parents with kids in both schools plan ahead. We especially encourage these parents to carpool to both decrease the number of cars coming to both campuses and to make sure students arrive safely and on time. Mr. Nolan confirmed that students are allowed on campus at 7:50. (Students who arrive earlier must be in Jag Care) As of now, only 9th graders are assigned to Access (7:45-8:20) for the Link Leader program but all students can come early. Finally, we are asking for parent volunteers to help guide traffic in both the morning and afternoon. The teachers will be out in force this week but will be returning to their classrooms next week, as students will need their help on homework, to make up tests/quizzes etc. If you would like to volunteer, please email Linda Aberle at laberle@jajags. Make sure to include your name, phone/cell number and days/times you are available. Thank you in advance for helping with this task! Sincerely, JA Administration
