Dear Katy Perry I was really excited on Friday last week when you announced that whilst you’re in Australia on your Prismatic World Tour, that you would like to meet students from one of Australia’s most inspiring schools. I know you have partnered with Telstra to launch a competition asking schools to create a video demonstrating what makes them special, unique and inspirational. We got to work straight away- this brief fits RIA perfectly! A group of twenty RIA students and our Creative Director, Susan Royle, met in the conference room first thing Monday morning to brainstorm how we would show you how unique and inspiring RIA is. You would have loved listening to students share their views on why they love being in RIA: “I love that I am accepted as an individual- I don’t feel pressured to be like everyone else.” “I feel like I belong here- like RIA is my family.” “I have a great connection with my teachers- they really care about me and challenge me to do well.” “RIA is like a journey for me. Before I came here, I already loved acting. RIA allows me to get better at what I love but it also helps me to get to where I want to go when I leave school.” We filmed the closing sequence of the video at lunchtime today in the PAC, which involved all 250 RIA students. You asked us to be creative, but I think you will be surprised and delighted with what our students have come up with. The prismatic lights that Sam, Bryce and Mitch rigged yesterday were brilliant. I really wanted you to know that although we might be competing against other schools that employ professionals to highlight how they do their school, our students have done everything for this video, from developing the concept, plotting the story, filming, lighting, audio, costumes, make-up, editing, dancing, acting, singing, directing, and producing. The soundtrack “Joseph Moon” is an original song written by Jess Tyler- a year 11 music specialism student. I know Jess would be happy to perform with you if you asked her to! Earlier in term three I was involved in course counselling for 2015. I was discussing options for VCE subjects with a senior RIA student and her mum. It took me by surprise when the conversation turned to the teacher who would most likely be taking a particular subject when the parent started to cry. She said that she couldn’t believe how dedicated and inspirational this teacher was and how lucky they felt to have her teach her child. I know you would have been deeply moved by the emotional response that this teacher evoked. Great teachers make a difference! I wondered Katy, if you launched this competition because you had a great teacher that made a difference to your life and your career? I took the first half of the year off on Long Service Leave. It was sensational to come back straight into Showcase and witness the unique and productive partnership between dedicated teachers and passionate and talented students. Unfortunately, Katy, you couldn’t have got a ticket because it was a total sell out! The feedback from friends, family and the local community who viewed the exhibition and performances makes me certain that it wasn’t just me who found the event something totally out of the ordinary. RIA is special. RIA is unique. RIA is inspirational. Don’t take my word for it though Katy! I can’t wait for you to see the video that our amazing students put together.
