We had a weekend like no other here at Salthaven West! Our friends at Eco-Friendly Sask put us in touch with a family who was having issues with snakes in the old stone basement of their country home and had started making their way into the rest of the house including the kitchen and bedrooms. Understandably they did not want them there anymore but recognizing the environmental value of snakes they didnt want to kill them either. When we arrived to help we found a lot of Plains Garter Snakes - 56 to be exact! Garter Snakes hibernate in the winter and this time of year they begin making their way underground. As snakes can be very loyal to their hibernaculums we figure that most had probably returned for years but now the population had multiplied making it unliveable. Garter Snakes have an average of 30 babies per litter, and the most ever recorded was 90. When we left with the 56, we knew there were more hiding, lurking behind the walls and under the floor. After a visit from the homeowner today we now have a total of 102! Unless we find a known hibernaculum in the next few days to release them at, they will be overwintered and released in the spring. As you can imagine that will be quite a task! If you have any terrariums youd like to donate, please let us know!
