Dear Kizomberos, myself as a teacher I feel the need to share my experience and help students and those who are new to Kizomba, to understand what is Kizomba, what is not and WHY! My objective with this post is to create a positive and constructive personal point of view. It’s true that there aren’t written rules about kizomba but there are the basics which define what is Kizomba, same as for Salsa, Bachata or other dances. Kizomba is becoming very popular and because of that Kizomba market is filled up with many Kizomba teachers with different experience, where you can find the ones with strong knowledge, knowing the culture, music, dance ethics and the most important… THE BASICS of Kizomba! It’s Natural when in such growing demand market as Kizomba, supply appears but doesn’t mean that the quality follows. Many dancers and teachers bring experience from other dances to Kizomba and share them as Kizomba even tho 90% of the Kizomba they teach are influences of other dances, where these styles reveal to have nothing in common among them. Therefore I would like to use a few videos to show you some different teachers with different styles but all of them with something in common, what I consider to be the basics. PAY ATTENTION TO THE NEXT DETAILS IN THE FOLLOWING VIDEOS: The Posture is similar, the Holding is similar, the movement TOGETHER is similar, the basic steps are similar, the feeling transmitted is similar. In the basic steps you will find The Slow Basic (Used for tarraxinha/Ghetto Zouk, song’s introduction and moments in the music without the strong beat. The side Basic or basic in 2, the Travel as Eddy Vents call it and some call it Basic 3, the turns, and specially what defines Kizomba the VIRGULA, also called the syncopation. This video Belongs to Eddy Vents, definition of Basic Steps: https://facebook/photo.php?v=453245861484873 This video out of my Black Father, Mestre Petchu and Lovely Vanessa https://youtube/watch?v=4AWS6v001gA This one by a great Dj, Mr Tó Costa https://youtube/watch?v=MVibJ0Ab2BE This one by another amazing teaching Couple Paulo and Lanna https://youtube/watch?v=besr9U9oco0 This one from a World reference, Paula and Ricardo from Afrolatin Connection https://youtube/watch?v=FxcmGO-s_1s This one from another great couple Miguel and Susana Amado, and notice in this video Specially the clear “virgule” on the minute 0:45. On minute 1:28 they loose their hands to show the students how all the lead comes from the torso and not their hands. https://youtube/watch?v=zGvdXLK_xi4 Another world reference, the one and only Kwenda Lima & Kaizen Dance https://youtube/watch?v=3r89hhq2qy8 To show you what is not Kizomba anymore I decided to use a video of one of our most popular classes, Kizomba with Tango Influence, where the influence of another dance marks where Kizomba stops, and starts being something else. https://youtube/watch?v=09BVRy2d9rE And again one of our videos dancing Kizomba: youtube/watch?v=5LksVdMlVWU To finish, for me, Kizomba is also defined as a Sensual Dance, some say where 2 bodies dancing as 1, a dance of connection and feeling, A dance where magic happens. And this cannot be seen with your eyes but with your heart as all the most beautiful things in LIFE. Have a beautiful day! P.S.: There are more extremely talented Colleagues who bring the essence of Kizomba to the dance floors and classes like Mandela and Lisa, Tomas and Filipa, Bandeira, to name some among many others which unfortunately I cant put the videos of all otherwise this post would be even longer but equally very good examples of what is Kizomba.
