Dear Member, NB. Tour 29th March - GORDON HILL AND FEDERATION ROAD : CANCELLED but replaced by – PARKTOWN WEST – 100 YEARS OF ARCHITECTURE AND PERSONALITIES FROM 1903 TO 1913 Regrettably Gordon Hill and Federation Road tour has been cancelled. Mr Gareth Poole owner of The Pines has made access to his property conditional on the Foundation’s dealing with neighbourhood issues including the condition of the road surface around the circle in Federation Road. We cannot proceed with the tour as proposed – but will be offering members a walkabout in Parktown West: 100 years of Architecture and personalities from 1903 - 1913 which will include gardens on the Escombe Avenue Ridge with views south and west across the trees to Wits and Melville. We’ll be visiting the delightfully small-scaled Endstead home to bachelor Ernest Wilmot Slope, Baker’s first partner in Johannesburg and the man with the patience to train stonemasons to hammer dress stone. A dramatic change, although only a short step away, we encounter Peter Rich’s home, Westridge. Peter was voted the top International architect of 2013. His wife, Diane, has created a wonderful garden which climbs up the ridge to its peak. A Bankenveld garden carefully contoured by Wynand and Landi Dreyer leads up to their home, which has just turned 100. We are predicting cooler weather, but sunny skies so please bring water with you and sun screen! MEET: Nici Noble START: 14h00 PARK: At east end of Escombe Avenue and south end of shady Pallinghurst Road, Parktown DURATION: Approximately 2½ hours COST: R80.00 for members and R110.00 for non-members MAXIMUM No: 40
