Dear Members and Associates: The pet industry has been under attack by animal rights extremists whose view of animal ownership is one not shared by the majority of animal owners, animal breeders, and animal related businesses. Driven by emotion, not science, the animal rights extremists have aggressively fed the public the false narrative that all animal breeding and animal related businesses are cruel and akin to slavery. The most insidious way in which their strategy has taken form can be found in the subversive way in which organizations such as the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) pressure, infiltrate and influence government and non-government organizations. This philosophy is shown and proven in Mr. Sayres’ past organizations direct attacks and support of measures to remove the rights of animal owners. • Mr. Sayers relentless support of 12 years of litigation and harassment against Feld Entertainment (Ringling Brothers) ending in an over $6 million dollar settlement against ASPCA. • Mr. Sayres, in August of 2008 as President and CEO of the ASPCA founded New Yorkers for Clean, Livable and Safe Streets (NYCLASS), an animal rights organization committed to ending the NYC carriage horse industry. • Under Mr. Sayresʼ leadership, the ASPCA started NYCLASS with a “grant” of $250,000 to end the carriage horse industry despite the official position of ASPCA is that horses can be used in the carriage industry. • Mr. Sayers opposed legislation by states in their efforts to protect animals by allowing for the timely dissemination of information to authorities in “under cover” investigations. Organizations such as his termed the laws “AG Gag” and misrepresented the facts so that they could continue to use these “investigations” to raise money. • Mr. Sayers as ASPCA president supported legislation to raise the licensing fees on animals by almost three times current fees on non-spayed or neutered animals. While masked as a “population” position it was really a direct attack against animal breeders. • Mr. Sayers as ASPCA president started and supported their national “NO PET STORE PUPPIES” campaign. nopetstorepuppies. This campaign was a direct attack on puppy breeders across the country and tried to persuade the public that all breeders are bad. Mr. Sayres’ forty year career as a leader with animal rights organizations that support and collaborate with many others such as the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has proven his distaste for our community. His appointment by PIJAC is at best a slap in the face of all the animal owners who have supported PIJAC for years. At worst it is a direct infiltration of a philosophy against animal owners and our organization, Missouri Pet Breeders Association. Accordingly, the Missouri Pet Breeders Association opposes the hiring of Mr. Sayres by PIJAC. Sincerely, Board of Directors, Missouri Pet Breeders Association
