Dear Michael F. Bennet Since 2010, we have supported an orphan in Latvia named Madara. She was already 18 when we felt led to “adopt” her, so it was not possible to make her legally part of our family. However, we consider her our daughter and she considers us her parents. Madara, now 22, is married and has two boys, our grandsons, Tomass and Niks. Tomass is almost three and has severe asthma. His condition is so bad it causes him to vomit and sometimes stop breathing. After two weeks in the hospital the Latvian doctors could not find the trigger for his asthma. He was sent home and shortly had to return to the hospital–they still could not determine what was wrong. Since healthcare in Latvia is substandard compared to ours, we have turned to our physicians for advice. While the doctors in Latvia said there was no problem with Tomass being around smokers, our doctors adamantly insist that he should be nowhere near cigarette smoke. In addition, the Latvian doctors have made diagnoses and performed procedures that have been proven to enhance the severity of the attacks. One of their solutions is for Tomass to stay inside when the temperature drops below 40 degrees. In Latvia that can be as much as seven months of the year. Madara’s family lives in a studio apartment with all four sleeping and living in one room with a small kitchen and a small bathroom. The doctor’s solution means that the majority of the year Tomass’s world is reduced to a 12’x14’ room. It is difficult to see our precious little grandson suffer when we know he doesn’t have to with proper medical care. We are asking for your help to grant Madara and her family a way to relocate to America. Cold, damp Latvia is the worst kind of environment for asthma. We are fortunate to live in Colorado, an ideal climate for the treatment of asthma. Madara and her husband, Aigars, are hard working people. We have a network of support from our church and will care for them financially until they are able to support themselves. Our doctors are willing to provide Tomass with the care he needs. We are asking for any assistance you can give to allow us to keep our foster family in America permanently so that Tomass can live a long and productive life. Sincerely, Marv and Paulette Gutwein If you are unable to help us, we would appreciate it if you could send this on to someone they may be able to help us. Thank you You can contact us on Facebook, or at mama2bd@yahoo
