Dear Ms Chapelle, The article by Rebecca Aldous in the Squamish - TopicsExpress

Dear Ms Chapelle, The article by Rebecca Aldous in the Squamish Chief, Chapelle has no appetite for GMO ban, was brought to my attention today and I would like to applaud your willingness to support publicly science-based regulation for food products and for your understanding that our increasing understanding of genetics and molecular biology has created the opportunity to develop new technologies that − properly researched, tested, regulated and applied − can provide us with opportunities to feed our growing population, using less land, and help us to respond to the stresses that will be put on crop production systems as a result of climate change. The expedient thing for a BC politician to do these days is to support bans on genetically engineered crops even though I would hazard a guess that the vast majority know little or nothing about genetics, crop breeding, or production agriculture. The anti-GMO lobby is loud and vitriolic and, in BC, there is no counterbalancing pro-GMO lobby so it is easy to give in to the squeaky wheels, especially since municipal politicians have no jurisdiction or accountability in this arena, which is federally regulated. I commend you on your courage. Sincerely, Gordon Neish, PhD Nature Niche Scientific Consulting Canada
