Dear Parents and Guardians- I have done a poor job of communicating important information about the 5-8 homework policy and I think it has caused at least some of you some confusion-you have my apologies for that. Below is our new homework policy. But before you read it, I’d like you to know that middle school teachers will also be posting assignments and grades to Powerschool--students were given your instructions for logging into this on Wednesday, September 3rd. These passwords expire after one week, so try to login as soon as you get them. Sincerely, Matthew Baughman, Principal Homework Policy 5th-8th Grades Explanation At CVS school work is an important part of the learning that happens-students who do not do it will not be as successful as those that do. To support student success and to build in some accountability for work completion, we have created a homework policy for grades 5-8. Again, we have this policy because we fully believe that students only fail when we allow them to--this is one of the ways we want to support students. How Much Homework? Students should receive more work and be challenged with greater independence and complexity as they get older. Below is a chart that shows the amount of homework a child might receive (this is a limit, not a daily expectation) Grade Minutes of Homework per Night 5th 50 minutes 6th 60 minutes 7th 70 minutes 8th 80 minutes Our Commitment to You Teachers will input assignments to Powerschool within 24 hours of giving it to students and will grade it within one week of receiving it. The school will give you login information for accessing attendance and grades in Powerschool at the beginning of each school year and upon request. We will communicate to you within 24 hours when your student has not met minimum performance standards or has not done their homework. Often your child will be the one to call you. Teachers will use five minutes of their weekly Team Time meeting to share homework assignments with one another so that they can find a balance in work load for your child. Purpose of Homework sending homework when a student is not meeting standard support has been given in class and student isn’t able to complete in class to break down larger projects that can be done incrementally to help students develop skills and understandings that repeated practice improves, such as regular current event reports, reading logs, or math fluency practice Our Policy - all students will turn in all assignments - if assignments are late, students will receive either full or close to full credit for them - students will be asked to work at school from 2:45-3:40 after 1 missed assignment. If the class happens before lunch, the call will be made by the student at lunch. If it happens after lunch, the call will happen at the end of the day (2:35-2:40) - students will be given one opportunity to retake a quiz or test to meet our minimum competency of 80%--teachers will be sure students have resources (time/materials) to prepare for the retakes
