Dear Randall, Hawai‘i is the best place in the world to - TopicsExpress

Dear Randall, Hawai‘i is the best place in the world to live, but with the high cost of living it can be a tough place to make it. Families work hard, and its even harder when women arent paid fairly for the work they do. Women in Hawai‘i are paid just 83 cents for every dollar paid to men. This adds up to women who work full time in our state earning, on average, $7,708 a year less than men. That is an embarrassment. And it doesnt reflect our values. Today is Equal Pay Day, the day representing how far into 2014 a woman has to work to earn a salary equal to what a man earned in 2013. Women in America have to work more than 3 months longer than men just to earn the same amount of money. If we want to build an economy that works for everyone, and give our families a fair shot at the American Dream, its unacceptable to allow this unfair status quo to continue. We need to make sure that women receive equal pay for equal work. One of the many reasons I was so honored to receive President Obamas endorsement is that he has long been fighting for equal pay. The first bill the President signed into law was the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. This legislation fixed a tremendous problem and kept the courthouse door open for those discriminated against. We took another step forward today as the President signed important executive orders that will ensure that federal contractors pay their workers fairly. I was happy to be with him at the White House for this announcement and lend my support to this necessary action, but we still have a long way to go. In the Senate I am a proud co-sponsor of the Paycheck Fairness Act because when everyone is paid fairly our families and our economy are stronger. Earlier this year, you joined me as a Citizen Co-Sponsor of the Paycheck Fairness Act. Can you click here to ask your friends to join us in calling for equal pay for equal work? Together we can grow our middle class and give all of Hawai‘is families a fair shot at success. Mahalo, Brian Schatz U.S. Senator This email was sent to redm5954@rocketmail.
