Dear Reader Our inaugural CANSA Relay For Life Reservoir Hills (RFLRH) on the 16th of March 2013 was a great success and we raised over R110 000 for The CANSA Organisation! We, The Reservoir Hills Sports and Recreation Club could not have done this without everyone’s participation – we thank you! The Reservoir Hills Sports and Recreation Club (RHSRC) in partnership with The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) are hosting the 2014 CANSA Relay For Life Reservoir Hills. Who is The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA)? CANSA’s purpose is to lead the fight against cancer in South Africa. Its mission is to be the preferred non-profit organisation that enables research, educates the public and provides support to all people affected by cancer. cansa.org.za Who is The Reservoir Hills Sports and Recreation Club (RHSRC)? This is a sporting club that focuses on various community up-liftment projects, with special emphasis on youth development. The RHSRC is a non-profit organisation and also a registered Public Benefit Organisation. reshillsports.co.za What is Relay For Life (RFL)? CANSA Relay For Life is part of an international movement that unites cancer survivors and the communities that care about them. It offers everyone in a community, both young and old, the opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer and to honour those who have been touched by cancer. It is an opportunity for SURVIVORS and their loved ones to fight against cancer together! Who is a cancer survivor? Anyone who has ever heard the words: “You have cancer.” Whether you are in remission, still undergoing treatment or has just been diagnosed, you are alive and we would love to celebrate YOU! Relay For Life is a fun, overnight team event, which is volunteer-driven and community owned. At Relay, teams of 5-10 friends, neighbors, families and co-workers commit to having at least one team member walking around the track at all times (shared responsibility) for the 12 hours, because…cancer neither slumbers nor sleeps. The Relay For Life event opens with a heartfelt Survivors’ Lap, honouring cancer survivors and their caregivers. After sun set, tribute is paid in a very emotive Luminaria Ceremony by lighting candles inside luminaria bags which encircle the track. These luminaria bags are dedicated to those who have the lost their battle, to those who are still fighting and to those who have won their struggle against cancer. Teams are encouraged to raise funds in support of the fight against cancer in the region where the Relay is being held. Teams camp out overnight around the track and enjoy entertainment, fun and camaraderie in a festival-like atmosphere.
