Dear Rich, Interior Secretary Sally Jewell is threatening to - TopicsExpress

Dear Rich, Interior Secretary Sally Jewell is threatening to saddle Americans with nearly 600 million tons of carbon pollution, That’s like chopping down more than 440 million acres of American forests, an area four times the size of California. Tell Sally Jewell to stop fueling our climate crisis and start putting our planet first. Tomorrow, the Interior Department plans to auction off 147 million tons of coal for strip mining in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming. The sale comes after last week, Interior sold more than 9 million tons to Peabody and also announced it intends to sell another 167 million tons in September. Coal is mined for one reason: to be burned. Secretary Jewell is crazy to think that selling all this coal won’t be a disaster for this climate. Tell her to stop this insane coal frenzy. In June, President Obama said that we as a nation have to confront climate change for the sake of our future generations. Yet under, Sally Jewell’s watch, it looks like future generations are being thrown under the bus. Or in this case, the coal train. For several years now, WildEarth Guardians has tirelessly fought to rein in out of control coal mining throughout the West, especially the Powder River Basin, the largest coal producing region in the U.S. Why? Because this coal fuels more than 200 power plants here in the U.S. and is increasingly fueling power plants overseas. If we have any chance of combating climate change, we have to confront coal at its source. And we have to confront Sally Jewell and the Interior Department. Please tell her to stop fueling global warming and stop selling more coal. For the Wild, Jeremy Nichols Climate and Energy Program Director [email protected]
