Dear Scouts: We have spent the last several weeks learning about the Mishkan (Tabernacle), how it is to be constructed, the utensils contained in it, and the services to be conducted there. These things have all been created so that God will have a place where His glory can dwell among the Jewish people. Moses has inaugurated the priests, and now, in Parasha Shemini, the priests have conducted their first service. God also gives us a way that we can dwell with Him - every day, every time we do something necessary to life - just by eating. He gives us the laws of kashrut - which mammals, birds and fish we are permitted to eat. People sometimes mistakenly think that the laws of kashrut are intended for health reasons. While the rules may lead us to healthy eating and the practical results of that choice, the reason is spiritual. God tells us that He is holy, and that we can become holy by sanctifying ourselves through eating kosher food. We are what we eat. Shabbat shalom, Nelson © Nelson R. Block 2014
