Dear Tillamook Community, Our school year has begun and we are excited by all of the new faces to Tillamook High School. Our Freshman class, although a relatively small class, is full of energy and eager to get involved in their school community. Our Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors have welcomed the new class, as well as Foreign Exchange students from countries such as Germany, Turkey, Argentina, and Tajikistan. THS also welcomes four new teachers: Slade Sapora teaches Biology, Brittney Humphrey teaches Math, Andrew Morgan teaches English, and Ryan Hamilton teaches Social Studies. We are gearing up for Homecoming activities; our football team will play Seaside on Friday, September 27. Everyone is welcome, the 2013 Homecoming Queen is crowned, we’ll watch great THS football, and our THS alumni are recognized! Our first two weeks of school have been smooth and students have settled into their classes, taking their studies seriously. In order to offer additional support and enrichment to students our schedule is designed so that each trimester, one math teacher and one English teacher are available at the end of the day, during 6th period. Students are encouraged to visit these teachers to get questions answered, get additional instruction, or simply to delve into math and English at a deeper level. Similarly, we have athletic team study halls being held during 6th period; athletes check in and then have the opportunity to work on homework, or seek out the help of teachers. We have many goals this year. First and foremost, graduating all of our seniors prepared to be productive citizens, ready for the career path or college destination of their choice. Throughout the year, our staff will engage in professional development activities focused on providing support for our students and closing the achievement gap. Our schools are beginning a second year of a district-wide writing focus; THS is offering more opportunities for students to meet their essential skills requirements both in regular classes, but also in specially designed alternative assessment courses. We will continue to focus on improving student attendance and ramping up our Positive Behavior and Intervention Program, Mook POWER, emphasizing Pride, Ownership, Work Ethic, Embracing Community, and Respect. Go Mooks! Sincerely, Kevin Barnes Principal Tillamook High School
