Dear WCIL supporter, The In-Home Supportive Services program (IHSS) is under attack on a number of fronts. WCIL is reaching out to you to protect these services by joining our advocacy efforts. If you are not an IHSS recipient or provider, please disregard this message. 1) On July 1, 2014, IHSS will face an across-the-board 7% funding cutback that will reduce the amount of hours that will be covered through State monies. 2) The Governor’s budget is recommending that IHSS providers be restricted to working no more than 40 hours a week even if consumers require more. This means some consumers will have to coordinate the work of two or more care providers. Almost two-thirds of IHSS recipients receive care from providers who are related to them. Soon, these family members will be restricted to providing no more than 40 hours a week even if the needs are much greater. 3) The Service Employees International Union is circulating a petition for a state ballot initiative for the 2014 general election that mandates 75 hours of standardized training for IHSS providers. WCIL strongly opposes a one-size-fits-all training program that takes power away from the IHSS consumers who are the ones who know best how to meet their specific IHSS needs. If you get IHSS, these changes WILL impact YOU! Advocacy can be as simple as making a phone call or as involved as attending a meeting with State and local representatives.
