Dear Walmart, Like you, I do not condone the use of the “N” word. Since you’ve started the ball rolling with Paula Deen, let’s keep the momentum going! There are a couple more steps that need to be taken. Step 1: After your employees finish clearing the shelves of the offending cookware, please send them over to the CD department to remove all CDs that reference the “N” word. (Those will mostly be concentrated in the Rap/Hip Hop section.) But don’t stop there. If any artists have used the “N” word in any context within the last twenty years, even if their current album does not contain that word, please remove their CDs also. Step 2: Since your company KNOWINGLY and WILLFULLY sold those CDs containing the “N” word, I think some sort of self-imposed penance is in order. Following your example regarding Paula Deen, I think it would be appropriate to cease business operations and close your 8150 stores. I concede that, given the size of your company, this will be a logistical challenge and will take some time. However, Walmart, Target and several other companies were able to effectively cripple Paula Deen Enterprises within one week so I am confident that you are up for the challenge. Since you are a considerably larger corporation, please allow yourselves a two-month window in order to complete the shut-down. I realize that, like Paula Deen, there are lots of people who depend on you for their livelihood and will be hurt by this action. However, sometimes that is the unfortunate consequence of the bad decisions made by our corporate leaders . . . twenty years ago. Dear Target, Please reference the above letter to Walmart and, as soon as possible, begin the process of closing your 1776 stores in order to atone for your complicity in the promotion of ethnic insensitivity. Dear Jesse Jackson, Several years ago, you used the “H” word in a slurred reference to the Jewish community. I must therefore ask that you resign immediately from your position with the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition. After all, you are not just someone who sells pots and pans; you are supposed to be the very example of respect for all people, regardless of ethnicity. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
