Dear WalthamSEPAC Members, We would like to bring these new developments taking place in the special education department to your attention. Please see the message below from Superintendent Nicholson. We are offering our support to the Superintendent and if you have any questions, please contact us at walthampac@gmail. Thank you, Amy DiMatteo & Susan Sutherland WSEPAC-Co Chairs ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Nicholson, Susan Date: Mon, Feb 10, 2014 at 3:14 PM Subject: special education To: Susan Sutherland , Amy Dimatteo Cc: Chadbourne, Patricia , Nicholson, Susan Dear Susan and Amy: Thank you for meeting with me this morning. As we discussed, our Administrator of Pupil Personnel has resigned. It is important to acknowledge, though, that Waltham does have two full-time assistant directors, one at the elementary level and one at the secondary level. I will be working closely with them as well as with our special education lawyer, Catherine Lyons, on any extraordinary special education issues that may emerge from now until the end of the month. I shared with you the short-term and long-term plans that I will be working on over the next few weeks. For example, I will identify one of our assistant directors to be the interim director on a short-term basis (between now and the end of the month). Basically, our staff needs to know who to call in case an issue bubbles up. Other short-term plans include the following: 1. The Business Manager and I will continue to work with the special education staff and the principals on budget items related to special education. 2. I have meetings scheduled with the WEA and the WSSA regarding the reassignment of evaluation responsibilities for those folks that our Admin of Pupil Personnel had primary responsibility for evaluating. 3. I have been working with our special education attorney on transition planning. 4. I have scheduled a meeting with the ETLs on Tuesday. 5. I have scheduled a meeting with the school psychologists on Thursday. 6. I met with the secretaries in the pupil personnel office Friday morning. 7. I spent some time networking this week-end, and there are several people who may be interested in working with us in special education through the end of this school year. A former assistant director in Waltham and now a special education director in a district closer to her home, has also reached out to someone who may be interested in helping us. I am very thankful for her assistance. Long-term plans: 1. Consider building the capacity in the district for certified special education administrators, with significant support, to develop as potential full-time administrators in special education. 2. Work collaboratively with George Frost, Human Resources Administrator, on advertising for this open position to be filled in a more permanent way in July. -- Save the Date and Join us for a Meeting!
