Dear Zane, I have a question, but first let me say I think the things you are doing to assist people are amazing. I really hope to do advocacy work one day and you are an inspiration. Anyway, my question stems from the comments and arguments on your page centered around the poor living conditions the people are in. So many people are saying the government has a responsibility to help them, they should sue, etc but do you really think thats true? America is turning into a debt ridden country full of people of all ages and races that are lazy and have a sense of self entitlement. Im in Nigeria now (my husband is from here originally) and you should see the hustle these people have. NOTHING is given to them, they get up every day and hustle to get it. No air conditioning, no hot water, minimal electricity but these people have drive---and intelligence The conditions of the apartments you showed are not good, I get that, but they are nothing compared to millions all over the world who are living in REAL poverty. People sleeping in ditches. And before anyone says, I never know when Ill be in there position--I have been. I lived in the projects for four years. During that time I worked hard and got a bachelors (first person in my family) and moved up. Im just wondering how our country will continue if so many of our citizens want everything handed to them? MY RESPONSE: It is easy to speculate and say that people choose to live a certain way. I would never do that. We are living in very hard times and I honestly believe that most people are trying to enhance their lives at every given opportunity. Some remain stagnant in fear, some are depressed, and MOST simply do not have the resources or support system to do whatever needs to be done. I am glad you were able to achieve what you have but, like you said, you are the FIRST in your family to earn a college degree. I am way too humble and even more way too compassionate to ever tell someone that they are at fault for their circumstances. I see the comments people make on such posts and they are not helpful if they are not suggesting a solution or offering up prayers. Most of the people struggling have children who rely on them and I refuse to believe that they are not in pain over the fact that they cannot provide for them better.
