Dear all, This is one of the times when I feel so fortunate to be a Singaporean. Today is the 29th of September and it is the second day of the Occupy Central movement. The objective of the movement is to put pressure on the Hong Kong government as its universal suffrage proposals have turned out to be a “fake” democracy. This is because Beijing has declared that the nominees for the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, which must be elected in 2017, must be screened by a committee that is filled with Beijing loyalists. As such, only candidates favoured by Beijing will eventually appear on the ballot. As of the first day of the protest, the Hong Kong police force has constantly used violence in the form of pepper sprays, tear gas canisters, and rubber bullets to harm the Hong Kong protesters in an attempt to disperse the 10,000 people strong crowd. The police have also arrested 78 people, ranging in age from 16 to 58. To me, this is not democracy. This is purely suppression by the Hong Kong government. What I don’t understand is why the police force is doing this. They are Hong Kong people after all. They are harming their own people, and there are forfeiting their own rights. In Singapore, while some of us may not be happy with the policies that the government has implemented (especially national service for the guys), but let’s just take a step back and realise how fortunate we are right now. Let’s not forget how our forefathers have fought for our independence. To me, the only difference right now is that Hong Kong is going through what Singapore has gone through 50 years ago. And for that, I am grateful. Walter https://youtube/watch?v=r6wRbq0mnOM&list=UUT8C3jTyHKxVTQN3QqQrdNA
