Dear fellow balloon Artists, recently, I’ve discovered a new selling technic from another balloon Artist. This person takes random balloon photos from the internet and sells them to his clients. Although I’ve heard about this sort of thing being done before, I haven’t experienced this first hand until now. Imagine my surprise when I found my photo, taken while helping another balloon company make a giant labyrinth in June 2013 on the wall of Emil Frey’s FaceBook page last weekend! The client, Emil Frey, used my photo to promote an event that was sold to them by this balloon Artist who took my photo from the internet. Is this a normal sales technic in the balloon world or do you find this a little shocking and out of hand? Maybe I’m naive, though I feel that there was a lack of respect in this situation. I’ve noticed, at balloon conventions & in general, that teachers always try to name the person that taught them how to make a certain figure, out of respect. Some of us have a certain amount of respect amongst fellow balloon Artists. It’s a tricky subject and it can be difficult to know where to draw the line. We all need money to pay our bills, though there’s a certain amount of ethic moral that should be taken into account when selling and promoting. It’s certainly more credible to sell balloon decor that one has already created instead of copying the thousands of balloon decor that can be found online. What do you think? Your feedback is very welcome. I’d really appreciate the feedback of Luc Bertrand, Sue Bowler, Pascal Grooten, Antonio Bécares Rodríguez, Brian Asman, Manon Dudziak and all of you that wish to participate in this conversation. Many thanks! --- This is the photo that was used. Our bodies were cut out of the photo and the top was used to promote the Emil Frey event. This photo was taken right after the walls were put into place. We had just started the decor, so the labyrinth was pretty basic at that point.
