Dear friends, There are many dirty energy projects threatening the climate all around the world, but one of the newest dirtiest plans is going to be built right here in Europe. Have you ever heard about Elektrownia Północ? Well neither had I until 2 years ago. Since then I’ve been doing all I can to put an end to this new huge coal power plant - the largest planned in Europe. At a time when Europe needs to be leading the renewable energy transition, investors are putting their money into dirty projects and locking both Poland and Europe into coal dependency for years to come. Elektrownia Północ will emit around 10 mln tons of CO2 annually, more than the whole of Latvia or Cyprus alone. Fighting this is hard, but with your help, we still have time to tell the investor that we won’t let this happen. Stop this dirty power plant -- sign the petition. Not only will it damage the local landscape and cultural heritage sites, but its pollution will harm human health as well as have a heavy toll on the soil, water and precious local wildlife. That’s not to mention the climate change impacts it will contribute to. Climate change doesnt see any boundaries, and all of the efforts towards renewables in your country could easily go to waste if such a coal-monster were to see the light. But there is more to this project than environmental crisis. It is the crisis of credibility. Dr Jan Kulczyk, the richest man in Poland, whose company is the main investor of Elektrownia Północ, is also the chairman of Green Cross International – a respected environmental organization that works for making the world a safer and better place for all of us. What’s more incredible, he also belongs to the Climate Change Task Force which gathers climate experts and leaders from all around the world whose goal is to solve the climate crisis. Does investing in a major dirty energy project sound completely contradictory to this mission? Dr Kulczyk himself has declared several times how deeply he cares for the future of our planet and all its inhabitants. ‘We have a choice. Unless we start to eliminate the sources of global environmental risks today, tomorrow they will eliminate us’ he has recently said. Lets tell Dr Kulczyk to be true to his own words and do what is right – abandon the Elektrownia Północ project. Sign and send the letter, and please join me to stop this dinosaur project. Together we can still make it happen! Diana Maciąga
