Dear friends and family: Ive been thinking long and hard about this, and I have decided to deactivate my Facebook account. Ive had it since my freshman year in college, way back when you actually had to be attending college to have a profile. Its bittersweet. Since moving to our new home, weve had no internet other than the little bit of service we can get if we stand in a certain part if our yard and not move a muscle. It was so aggravating at first, but honestly, it has been so rewarding. Im not one who spends every waking minute scrolling through my news feed, but I never realized that during almost every free moment, Id casually grab my phone out of habit. I think Facebook is an amazing way to keep up with old friends and family you never get to see, but somewhere along the way it morphed into more than that for me. It has become a part of my daily routine, and I dont like that at all. I hardly ever grab my real camera during a precious moment any more. I use my phone and upload it strait to Facebook because theyve made it so easy. That reality hit me pretty hard today. Ive decided that I want my life to be personal again. I dont want my kids growing up with social media being a main focus in their childhood. I know its never going away and that it will only get worse when theyre teenagers, but I am determined that they will not learn this habit from me. The more I think about it, the more embarrassed I get that there is a play-by-play of virtually their entire little lives on the World Wide Web. I hope this doesnt offend anyone, and I am absolutely not judging any of you, it is just something I need to do for myself. I have truly enjoyed watching everyones babies grow up, and I am going to miss you all dearly! Goodbye Facebook!
