Dear members of the press, The event will be short and will commence as soon as the noon service is over (around 12:45pm) Please join us tomorrow Sunday October 20th, after the noon services at the Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church(72 Maverick St, East Boston) where Pastors representing over 30 congregations in East Boston will unite in prayer and will call for the community and the Friends of East Boston/No Eastie Casino volunteers to go out and stop this casino proposal in its tracks. If you havent heard by now, Suffolk Downs has removed Caesars Entertainment as its casino operations partner. This is because of red flags raised in background checks that, apparently, showed that Caesars has ties to organized crime. Despite this, Suffolk Downs and the City of Boston are acting like this is a blip in the process. The mayor has already gone on the record to protect Suffolk Downs, calling Caesars “a small part” of the mitigation agreement. Here are some talking points to use with voters: · Unfortunately, we cannot count on good business judgment from Suffolk Downs when it comes to who they choose to bring into our community. As recently as two months ago, Suffolk Downs owner Joe O’Donnell stated that Caesars was “as professional as they come.” Clearly, they did not do due diligence in vetting Caesars – a company they have had a relationship with since 2011—and only ended the relationship when forced to do so. · This raises serious questions about the value of the City’s and Suffolk Downs’ host community agreement and shows that the promises in the mitigation agreement were made to be broken. Many key elements of the mitigation agreement—including key components of the jobs and small business plans—were tied to Caesars’ employee practices and Total Rewards programs. · Despite the glaring problems with Suffolk Downs and the casino, we anticipate that Suffolk Downs leadership and billionaire investors will continue to push for a vote on 11/5. Suffolk Downs is acting like this is a blip in the process and will likely name a new casino partner as early as Monday and will be full steam ahead. · Suffolk Downs has now picked two corporations, Caesars and Vornado Realty Trust, that have been unable or unwilling to pass background checks. Now, more than ever, it is critical that we educate our neighbors and voters about the glaring problems in the Suffolk Downs casino plans, and the flaws in transparency that have plagued this fight from the start.
