Dear omniglot friends, a few days ago ive come across a thread where people talked about why koreans and japanese hate accepting the correlation between their languages. well, its not that we hate it, but its the matter of how the group is named; most of the koreans would get mad if korean was categorized as japonic and so would the japanese if their language was called koreanic (itd be solved at once if they came up with a neutral name that both sides would be satisfied).. Years of political, economical, diplomatic, territorial and historical disputes in east asia have influenced even the academic field, injecting somewhat nationalistic ideas letting the matter become extremely sensitive. Ive heard some korean linguists insist that japanese came from ancient korean and a few japanese saying vice versa, and a couple of chinese asserting that both languages were the deriviatives of chinese (..sorry, u two, but i strictly believe that itis a nonsense). The reason why i write this is to ask if such phenomena could be seen among other nations as well. that is, are u aware of any dispute in the field of linguistics based on nationalistic ideas such as the one listed above? ive heard that theres one btn croatian and serbian, but i do not know of it well...
