Fee Based Internships, Work Experience and Professional Year Programs At this time of year, many organisations are advertising internships and other work experience opportunities. These are a great way to build employment skills and secure future graduate employment. There are some organisations offering opportunities which require students to pay significant amounts of money to join a program. Students should use caution when considering these, to ensure the outcome is beneficial to their career goals. Warning Signs to Watch For Poor Advertising and Communication When an employer/organisation cant communicate effectively, by email, phone, or in writing, be careful. If an opportunity is not advertised on mainstream job sites, be extra careful, as there may be no regulation of these sites eg: Gumtree online noticeboard Limited Contact Information Vague contact information (no contact person or company name) and phone numbers are other warning signs. You should be able to easily search Google and find the company and company information. Jobs That Sound Too Good to be True If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. There is no easy path to finding an internship or graduate program. What Students Can Do There are a few things you can do to protect your interests. - Google the company to find out what you can discover about it online - Check with the Careers Centre to see if they have any information on the company. - Use reputable recruitment search sites, such as CareerHub anu.edu.au/careers - Check with relevant professional associations to see if the organisation is accredited with the profession eg: CPA Australia, Chartered Accountants Australia + New Zealand, Australian Computer Society - For Professional Year Programs, go to the Department of Immigration website to check accreditation.
