Death Causes Security Threat. KNA Kilifi. 23rd September 2013. The death of a young man in Kolewa village of Kikambala Division in Kilifi County last week is causing unease amongst the residents of two villages with allegations that young men from the villages are arming themselves. Oscar Ngala, aged 17 years was stabbed to death in unclear circumstances after a football match turned chaotic last Saturday in what is being described as an indication of rising ethnic tensions in the cosmopolitan region of Kilifi South which covers Mtwapa and Kikambala. Junju area Senior Chief, Mr. David Kahindi, has stated that the incident and subsequent events are posing a threat to the peace and tranquility in the area as members of both villages are behaving suspiciously towards one another. A security meeting held on last Friday at the Shariani Primary School observed that there was urgent need for security officers to patrol the region on a regular basis as an indication or surety to the residents that security was adequate. The residents and the sub county security team also called for the leaders to convene peace meetings or forums that target the youth in the many villages noting that the youth felt sidelined in the security of their areas. Assistant County Commissioner, M’s Leah Njenga reiterated that security remained a collective responsibility and has urged the residents to report all suspicious incidents to the authorities. She called upon the residents to accept to testify against criminals as this was the only way they would be assured of security as the criminals would be behind bars and they would be able to pursue their interests peacefully. The security meeting was attended by members of the district peace committee, the provincial administrators and representatives from the Police Services. In another event, the call for peace within the County has been sounded after Kilifi County Deputy Governor launched the “Patriotism Beyond Borders Initiative” on Friday where he called on all residents to maintain peace for the purpose of development. Mr. Kenneth Kamto has decried the increasing cases of murder in the County on the pretext of witchcraft and urged residents to work towards a peaceful Kilifi. He was speaking at the Karisa Maitha Stadium in Kilifi where the Kenya Muslim Youth Alliance also sensitized residents on the need to maintain peace in the County. End.
