Debate on the word homophobic. Recently Ive read a few comments where people justify bigotry by saying they arent homophobic because they arent scared of gay people. This sort of thing, like many quirks of the world stick in my mind because I thought they had a point. But then I extrapolated... It occurred to me that maybe ignorance, bigotry and prejudice comes from fear - but not fear of gay people or Muslims or religion but just a fear of the unknown. Assumptions made with little understanding of how something really is - for example I saw many assumptions made during the marriage equality debate to which my reaction was but its not like that at all. So my resulting position, is that someone may not be scared of a gay person (nor should they be), but they do have a fear of what they dont know, resulting in barriers being put up by them. Those barriers then stop their ability to see things from a different perspective. Fear feeds negativity and manifests as bigotry. On a daily basis Id encounter someone that says something lightly offensive but asks out of the willingness to understand rather than a purpose to build a divide. The best thing we can do as a human race, and demand of our leadership, is to build better ways to see things from each others perspective. Right - best get back to mowing the lawn!
