Dec 25th - Is Today Any Different? - Staying Focused this Christmas Kif Anderson - December 25, 2007 MERRY CHRISTMAS! Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift. II Corinthians 9:15 This is and isnt a Christmas passage. Heres what I mean. It definitely is from the standpoint that this verse is referring to the gift that God has given to us in the form of His Son, Jesus Christ. And as we all know, we have decided and determined to set this day aside as a special day of celebration and commemoration of His birth. But it isnt a Christmas passage from the standpoint that the original context of this has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the Babe in Bethlehem or with the scene at the stable. When we look this verse up as it appears in the Bible, we discover that it actually appears in the middle of a letter of correction and rebuke that Paul wrote to the Christians at the Church of Corinth. This is about as far removed from the imagery of Christmas as you can possibly get. But I find this fascinating because it shows that being thankful for Gods gift is something that can and ought to occur in every season of life. We shouldnt just pull out our gratitude for Christs birth along with our holiday decorations and ornaments. Instead, its something that should be at the foremost of our lives all the time. Even when it comes to things that would seemingly have nothing to do with Christmas, theres always a precedent and a purpose to be thankful for Gods indescribable gift. This is significant because our natural inclination is to make a big to-do list about baby Jesus and then become less mindful of Him tomorrow, next week, next month, until Christmastime eventually rolls around next year. Being thankful for Gods indescribable gift does not depend on a particular day or season. It ought to be a condition of the heart that starts the moment we are born again and extend on into eternity. So let us celebrate this day and everyday the life of Jesus Christ and how He lives in us. WISHING YOU A VERY BLESSED AND CHRIST CENTERED CHRISTMAS
