Dec 8: Typhoon Ruby and the Immaculate Conception All these preparations for the coming of Typhoon Ruby made me think about the Immaculate Conception. Days before the typhoon made landfall in the Visayas area, PAGASA and other government agencies already warned residents of low-lying areas and coastal towns of the impending danger. The result was the massive evacuation of families to safer grounds and this consequently saved the lives of thousands of people. Something quite similar happened with regard to our salvation. Even before the Son of God became man in order to save us, God had prepared the soul of the woman who would become the Mother of His Son. God spared the soul of Mary from sin, thereby saving her at the very moment of her conception, making her a worthy vessel to carry the Incarnate Son of God. God, who is the source of our hope (PAGASA) wanted to raise us from our low-lying condition, due to our sinfulness, and bring us to higher grounds, which is His supernatural life. This tells me that man’s salvation was not just an afterthought or search-and-rescue operation but a well-planned and well-executed act by Almighty God. “O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us, who have recourse to thee.”
