Decatur man accused of burning baby with oven cleaner 11 HOURS AGO • HUEY FREEMAN H&R STAFF WRITER DECATUR – A 23-year-old Decatur man is being held on $250,000 bond, after he admitted to pouring oven cleaner on a 14-month-old baby who is being treated in a hospital for burns on his back, stomach and genitals. Cory L. Patterson was booked into the Macon County Jail Tuesday on preliminary charges of aggravated battery to a child, endangering the life/health of a child and possession of drug paraphernalia. Decatur police were sent to Decatur Memorial Hospital on Tuesday on a report of a baby who had suffered severe burns. During a police interview, Patterson originally said he was caring for the baby, the child of his girlfriend, when the baby “climbed into the shower tub area” while he was taking a hot shower. He told police the hot water caused the infants injuries. He said the accident occurred about 8 p.m. Monday in the mobile home where they all lived, in the 1000 block of West Harrison Avenue. But the medical personnel said they believed the babys burns “did not appear to be caused by water,” but instead appeared to be chemically induced, said an affidavit by Decatur police detective Todd Koester. The infant was transferred to Springfield Memorial Medical Center, where he was diagnosed by a burn specialist with “second-degree burns from the top of his back to his buttocks and to his genitals,” as well as first-degree burns to his lower abdomen. He was admitted to the hospital for observation of his burns. His burns had to be monitored especially because they were in danger of being infected because he did not receive medical treatment immediately, medical personnel told police. Patterson “eventually” changed his original story. He told police that about 8 p.m. Monday “he sprayed oven cleaner from a bottle onto the back of (the victim).” He said “the oven cleaner then foamed up all over the entire back (of the victim).” Patterson said he then took the baby into the bathtub to rinse the oven cleaner off, and he believed the combination of water and oven cleaner caused some of the burns as the mixture ran off his body. The baby “did not receive medical treatment for his injuries sustained in this incident until about 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, about 14 hours after he was exposed to this caustic substance,” Koester wrote in his statement. When police searched the trailer where the incident occurred, they found drug paraphernalia, including a pipe Patterson said he uses when he smokes marijuana. Patterson is due in circuit court for his arraignment by Tuesday. and the bastard will pay
