December 12, 2014 LEPTOSPIROSIS Leptospirosis has been a growing concern over the last several years. We have had periodic serious outbreaks in the Baltimore area for 10 years. The organism is microscopic and is usually contracted from urine voided by an affected animal. Clinical symptoms generally reflect kidney involvement. Drinking excessive amounts of water, not drinking at all, anorexia, weakness and gastrointestinal symptoms are most commonly seen. General diagnostics include routine blood work, urinalysis, and specific blood tests for leptospirosis. The course of the disease can progress rapidly so a prompt diagnosis is helpful. Treatment is centered around antibiotics and supportive fluid therapy. Many cases of leptospirosis can result in death if caught to late in the course of the disease. PREVENTION is the best protection. All of our canine vaccines provide immunity against leptospirosis, including all four current seotypes that affect canines. Keeping your pet current on vaccinations is the best way to prevent this serious threat.
