The organism is microscopic and is usually contracted from urine voided by an affected animal. Clinical symptoms generally reflect kidney involvement. Drinking excessive amounts of water, not drinking at all, anorexia, weakness and gastrointestinal symptoms are most commonly seen. General diagnostics include routine blood work, urinalysis, and specific blood tests for leptospirosis. The course of the disease can progress rapidly so a prompt diagnosis is helpful. Treatment is centered around antibiotics and supportive fluid therapy. Many cases of leptospirosis can result in death if caught to late in the course of the disease.
